Manhattanville Baseball gets the ball rolling

After finishing second in the freedom conference tournament last season, the Manhttanville baseball team looks to make there stride towards the Freedom Conference tournament in the Spring 2015 season. Every year the Valiants are lucky enough to have a fall baseball season where coaches can evaluate  and prepare everything necessary going forward into the spring season. Although the Valiants have some talented freshman, the sophomore, junior and senior class have some strong performers returning to the field. Returning Sophomore Robbie Lynch was named all freedom conference first team as a freshman last season as well as receiving the Manhttanville male athlete rookie of the year award. He had a season batting average of .351 and lead the team with five homeruns.  Returning sophomore Chris Conklin was named all mid atlantic region second team and ECAC all south Region first team pick to go with all freedom Conference first team honors as a freshman. He also lead the team with an impressive .403 batting average.

The junior class also has some key contributors to the team. Infielder Jordanis Nunez was named second team all conference as a sophomore starting every game at shortstop for the Valiants. Kurt Hommen saw time in 29 games as a sophomore including 19 starts in the infield. Both players being key defensively

Although last years offensive production came mostly from the underclassman, the seniors have some big responsibility entering the 2015 season. Nick Euvino, who started every game at centerfield last season will have to increase his on base percentage to be a scoring threat every game. Euvino’s speed has put him eight all time in the Manhattaville stolen base record with 50. Losing star pitcher Alex Basso, will put Michael Lyon as the Valiants ace this year in the pitching rotation. Lyons success in past years has put him seventh all time in wins as a pitcher at Manhttanville. Two seniors that will lead the team this season on and off the field will be recently named captains Kevin Brady and Jeff Moskowitz. Brady had 37 starts as first base last season where he also led the team with 53 total hits. Brady was a second team all conference pick and looks to have a similar offensive season this year. Moskowitz, who appeared in 17 games in the outfield last seaon, looks to step up his role with being name captain this season.

With all the underclassman success last seaon, the Valiants are very positive and excited for the fall season. “The inter squads are going well. It gives the coaches a good idea of how people can produce in game situations that practice doesn’t show. We have everyone returning except the ace Basso, but Micael Lyon is going to step up and be the ace. The freshman are talented and will definitely contribute in the bullpen but we just need all the returners to play like we did last year and there is no doubt in my mind that we can bring the MAC championship back to the Valiants.” said senior captain Jeff Moskowitz.
